In a fiery press conference, Banerjee lashed out at Modi, labeling him ‘cowardly, hypocritical and fork-tongued’ for his stance on the contentious legislation. The confrontation marked a new low in the already tense relationship between the two leaders.
Opposition Parties Unite Against Modi’s Criticism
At the press conference, Banerjee was joined by several opposition leaders, including Congress’s Sonia Gandhi, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav, and Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray. Banerjee reserved her harshest words for Modi, accusing him of ‘cowardice’ for not being able to implement the bill despite his party’s promise. ‘Modi is a master of doublespeak,’ she said, adding that his words and actions were as ‘divergent as day and night.’ The Bengal CM also accused Modi of being a ‘hypocrite’ for claiming to be a champion of women’s empowerment while doing little to promote their rights in reality.
Banerjee’s attack on Modi was not limited to his policies; she also targeted his personal character, labeling him ‘fork-tongued’ for his ability to change his narrative at will. ‘Modi’s words are as slippery as a snake’s tail,’ she said, emphasizing the need for him to be held accountable for his actions.
BJP Hits Back at Opposition
Not to be outdone, the BJP responded quickly to Banerjee’s attack, accusing her of being ‘out of touch’ with the people’s concerns. ‘Banerjee is more interested in saving her party’s skin than in genuinely empowering women,’ said a senior BJP leader, adding that the opposition’s criticism was nothing but a ‘desperate attempt to divert attention from their own failures.’ The BJP also defended Modi’s commitment to women’s empowerment, pointing out that his government had taken several initiatives to promote their rights, including the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme.
As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen whether the women’s reservation bill will ever see the light of day.
