The opposition on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of shedding ‘crocodile tears’ over women’s quota. In a move that is being seen as an attempt to placate the growing frustration among women’s rights groups, Modi had made a passionate appeal for the introduction of a 33 per cent quota for women in the Lok Sabha, during a recent rally. However, the opposition was quick to dismiss the PM’s words, calling them an empty promise.
Opposition Unfazed by PM’s Emotional Appeal
Leaders of the opposition parties, including the Congress, the Left, and the Trinamool Congress, gathered at a joint press conference on Sunday, to express their skepticism over the PM’s intentions. ‘The PM’s words are nothing but a desperate attempt to gain the sympathy of the women’s community,’ said Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. ‘We have seen this act before. He has made promises galore, but has failed to deliver.’
The opposition parties are not alone in their skepticism. Women’s rights activists have also expressed their distrust towards the PM’s intentions. ‘We are not buying the PM’s tears,’ said a spokesperson for the All India Democratic Women’s Association. ‘We want concrete actions, not just words.’
PM’s Track Record on Women’s Issues
The opposition’s criticism of the PM is not without merit. Modi’s government has been at the centre of several controversies related to women’s rights in the past. The introduction of the Triple Talaq bill, which many saw as an attempt to undermine women’s rights, is one such example. The government’s handling of the Nirbhaya case, which saw the culprits being acquitted, is another. ‘The PM’s record on women’s issues is abysmal,’ said a spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress. ‘We cannot trust him to deliver on this promise.’
The opposition parties are now planning to take their campaign to the streets, with a series of protests and demonstrations planned across the country. ‘We will not let the PM’s empty promises fool us,’ said a spokesperson for the Left parties. ‘We will fight for the rights of women, and we will not be deterred.’
A Watershed Moment for Women’s Rights in India?
The PM’s appeal for a 33 per cent quota for women in the Lok Sabha is being seen as a watershed moment for women’s rights in India. However, the opposition’s skepticism has cast a shadow over the PM’s intentions. ‘This could be a defining moment for women’s rights in India,’ said a spokesperson for the All India Women’s Democratic Association. ‘But only if the PM is serious about delivering on his promise.’
The opposition’s rejection of the PM’s appeal has left many wondering if the PM is genuinely committed to women’s rights. However, one thing is clear – the PM’s words have not gone unchallenged. The opposition’s skepticism has brought the issue to the forefront, and now it’s up to the PM to prove his intentions.
